Takawiri Initiative deals with production of handmade stationery and craft items mainly from water hyacinth removed from the Lake Victoria shores in Kisumu.
We have identified alternative plant fibers like banana, papyrius, sea grass, corn stalk also gives unique paper. Our products include bookmarks, note books, gift bags, gift boxes, files, folders, paper lamp shades, greeting cards, name tags, business cards, envelopes, letterheads among others.
This initiative is trying to mitigate the effects of water hyacinth (Eichhornia CRASSIPES) that has denied thousands of fisher folk their daily livelihoods from fishing and also inhibited water transportation from the islands to the main land especially in the gulf region of the lake. The fishing industry has also lost millions of shillings in income since the water hyacinth interferes with the freshness of the water hence the health of the fish. This endangers aquatic life. Our initiative seeks to create employment to the thousands of communities who have lost their jobs as a result of the water hyacinth.
In 2013 , we registerd Takawiri Craft Enterprises to act as the marketting arm for Takawiri Initiative
